Friday evening my boyfriend dragged me into H&M to go shopping for him. We passed through the ladies section, Wes holding my hand making sure I didn’t get distracted by sequins or leopard (it’s all so cute!), until we arrived safely in his territory. Or at least he thought it was safe.

The men’s stuff was surprisingly female-friendly, particularly sweaters that I oohed and ahhhed over, including a hilarious Elmo knitted sweater – very eighties. Then I saw it – a wolf sweater! I laughed and immediately thought of Bill Cosby who was known for his elaborate knits (seen below) on the 80s tv series, “The Cosby Show”. Happy and satisfied with my new find, I continued shopping promising Wes to stay focused.

After doing some research, I found a video featuring the creator of Bill Cosby’s amazing knits! Koos van den Akker, who trained under Christian Dior in the 60s, shares his story of the Cosby Sweater and shows us how he makes them. My favourite moment? When he admits Breakfast At Tiffany’s made him move from Holland to New York, when he refers to his work as “painting with fabric” or when he says:

“This is a very thin line between absolutely awful and something of genius. I mean, somebody can look at this and say, “What the f— is this? This is the most horrible thing I’ve ever seen”

Watch for an amazing profile on this knit master.

  1. What a fantastic sweater! So perfect for this time of year.

And that quote pretty sums up my relationship with fashion: most of my favourite pieces are verging on hideous or crazy, or at least that’s how most people see them!

I’m the exact same way! I usually pick up an item and say, “Is it hideous or super cool?” That’s when I know it’s coming home with me. Thanks for commenting!

What a great sweater (and super adorable story)! Glad to know H&M can do some stuff right, I always find the fit of their clothes goes weird after one wash and as such I have pretty much completely given up on the place.
