There’s nothing like finding the perfect basic piece at a thrift store. Especially when they are black boots that cost $4. The ladies at the cash register agreed that these black beauties were a steal and eyed them up in a way that made me feel like a jealous girlfriend – keep your hands where I can see them girls and nobody gets hurt.

These Bandolino boots were rescued from Double Take Thrift Store on Gerrard and Parliament, Toronto.

  1. I’ve never been to a thrift store, but after I’ve looked at your “thrifted outfits” page, I’m all up for it! Any other good ones you’d recommend in the downtown area?
And what do you do with the shoes when you get them in terms of sanitizing/cleaning, what would you recommend we do?
    Thanks!

Yes go thrifting! There are not too many thrift stores downtown actually. Foxy Boutique (vintage) and some antique stores are in the same area so it will make your trip to Double Take worth it. The owner at Foxy is really nice and always willing to strike a deal. I would check out Kensington and there’s a store on Spadina & Queen on the North Side which is part of canadianthrifstores.com – they have good prices.

In terms of sanitizing/cleaning. Cleaning boots you can always use talcum powder, leave overnight and vacuum – it will absorb odours etc. I’ve also heard of people using alcohol wipes.

For the outside of shoes I always wipe down with a damp cloth and use leather conditioner (if they are leather) which is really important in maintaining any leather item. It may change the colour of your boots but it’s important to protect them. Also I have been told that vaseline works to condition!

Hope that helps! I may write a post on how to properly clean and store items. Thanks for commenting!

  3. Thanks for the fast response!
Yes, a post on cleaning leather items would be great. I need to start taking better care of my boots, right now they last me only one season, especially suede ones :(
I should try the Vaselne trick for starters. And I still have no idea how to treat suede. I tried washing a stain once, and ruined my new boots completely :(
