Done! Last Tuesday I had asked for your help in deciding which DIY to do and you picked the Tank-Dress! I really enjoyed this DIY from my Cool Couture Remake Book! It was easy and well thought through, especially when they turned in the sleeves to use as pockets! BRILLIANT! I made two of the dresses mostly because I could not decide which shirt to use! I hope you like it!

Steps:

  1. A t-shirt is originally used in the book for this DIY for the main dress section but since it’s winter I decided to use a thicker shirt. (Note: the tank top must withstand the weight of the shirt that will be sewn on top, make sure to get a good quality garment). Cut sleeves to t-shirt length. Do not make these too short because they will be folded in and used as pockets (Brilliant isn’t it!) and the length of the pocket dictates the final shape of the garment… trust me.
  2. Turn shirt inside-out and sew ends of new t-shirt sleeves together. You turn the shirt inside-out and sew with the “right sides” together so the seams aren’t visible.
  3. Cut along seam from neck to shoulder seam. I had a bit of trouble here as when I turned these unfinished ends underneath I didn’t have enough allowance to sew under when I got to the armpit. This makes me believe that they didn’t sew the ends under. So what I did was cut from collar to the very end of the sleeve, sew a 1/2 inch seam allowance from shoulder to sleeve end which allowed for the ends to be turned under properly at 1/4 inch.
  4. Pin the newly cut shirt on the tank top. Using a bust for placement is easiest but you can always pin it onto yourself or use the floor.
  5. Stitch the collar to the tank top in two places along the collar: the very top and over the existing stitches.
  6. You’re done! Belt it and head out to show off your new creation.

PS. As you will see I tore a hole in my shirt after having to rip out the stitches and re-sew it. Quick fix? Studs of course! So remember not to buy super cheap tank-tops and that if you mess up it’s always fixable!

Let me hear what you think!

Love this! Definitely one of my favorite DIY’s you’ve done

  2. Genya says:

Such and adorable dress – it looks very good on you. I love the detail on the top. You have a great blog!

  3. Ha. At first I didn’t ‘get it’, like I couldn’t picture how the t shirt got involved. And I had to reread the intro and first couple steps a few times. But the second gallery made it click – the Tshirt sleeves as pockets!!! That is so cool! And it gives this great shape. Great project.

(I have had to ’stud’ and patch up a lot of my DIY projects too.)

@ Kelly @Genya Thank-you so much! I’m happy with how they turned out!

@ShopTOLive I know! I was staring at the diagram in the book, (the instructions are in Japanese so they are no use to me) and I could not figure out where the pockets went! I was really excited when I figured it out, it IS cool!
