The Bow DIY: A Stop Motion How-To

Instructions

  1. Find a suitable sweater. I performed the DIY to two sweaters of different sizes, an XXL and a Medium, to show the difference
  2. Cut the sleeves off, fold in and sew edges to finish. I cut the waistband off the navy version because it was too tight and therefore would conflict with the final design.
  3. Cut a cuff off a sleeve or use a portion of the waistband for the middle of the bow.  Because the cuff seam is still in tact, making it tubular, just cut the tube making it a long strip ready to hold the folds of the fabric
  4. Place the strip in the middle of the sweatshirt ( be sure to play around with where you prefer the center of the “bow”) and sew on at the bottom of the strip, with most of the fabric at the top. This allows for the strip to fold down and under the fabric gathered, while covering the seam at the same time. So you are sewing on the side of the strip that won’t be shown.
  5. Gather the fabric in even folds and pull the strip down and under, pin to secure making sure the end of the strip goes underneath and past the seam you made in the middle. (The video I will post Thursday will elaborate on this part)
  6. Sew in the fold made by sewing the strip to the sweatshirt making sure to catch the other, loose end of the strip. This finishes and secures the bow, essentially finishing sewing a circle. By sewing in the fold you hide the stitching of the second seam, it’s referred to as “stitching in the ditch”.
