Fur necklace? Yes you heard correctly. I started this DIY knowing that I would either produce a huge mistake or something super cool. And while I don’t know what you think about the result (though someone I showed referred to it as a “rat”) I’m in love, in fact I’m wearing it today I’m so happy with it. Rat or not, here is how to turn a boring second-hand fur collar into something more wearable and exciting.
What You Need
- Fur collar (or anything you want to attach chains to)
- Chains; I got two types from Golden Beads on Queen, the thicker, $1.20/m and the thinner chain, $1/m
- Charms, I got this package of 10 crosses for $2.99 also at Golden Beads
- Needle-nose pliers to pull the chain links apart, $2.50 at Golden Beads
- Hand sewing needle
- Thread
- Scissors
The How To
- Plan. Decide on the type of chain and placement. Mine didn’t turn out the way I planned but it was useful to lay it out to decide the lengths.
- Hand-Sew rings into the lining of the fur collar for the chains to attach to
- Using pliers, carefully pull chain links apart at the ends of your necklace and close, attaching to rings.
- Easy! Only three steps, albeit a bit time consuming.

SUCH a great, innovative DIY! Love it!!
I’m surprised at how much I like this. Haha. I’m pretty ballsy, but I don’t know if I could proudly don that and rock it as much as I’m sure you do!
Would love to see a photo of it on you : ) Hope that doesn’t sound creepy. Haha.
YOURE SO ADORABLE
@Becca Thanks! I was definitely worried about how it would turn out.
@Rayanne haha, yes sooooooooooo creepy! haha, no v. understandable – I’ll find someone to take a pic and let you know how it looks on a real person rather than Bertha the bust
@Char thanks sweets!
I love it! really really do, I could never pull this off, but i just love the look!
Yes, I would love to see this piece on. I think I love it – the crosses kind of put it over the top for me (but in good way!).
And I went to the Collective last weekend. There sign above the door kind of threw me off (something about housewares? – but after walking back and forth ++ times, I finally looked inside the window). It was fabulous. I just posted one of my finds – pretty pretty dress! And I def want to go back because I totally missed the down stairs! Again, thanks for the information – I am always looking for new places to shop.
@Carm thanks! I wasn’t sure I could pull it off either but it’s very wearable!
@ShopTOLive Aww I should have mentioned the confusing sign! Sorry about that! I’m glad you found some great stuff! Thanks for the compliment!
I realized I linked you on my post with the name flipped – just fixed it! (Sorry about that.)
even more stunning in person (: love this necklace / collar!
Excellent idea! I have a fur scarf I bought on ebay a couple of years back and I never used it. Would work great for this. Thanks!
