I wanted to participate in this “bold shoulder” trend but I
wanted to do something a little bit different and a little less
“bold” and still have some impact. I found these appliques
at Sussman’s Bridal and Costume Supplies on Queen Street
and a blazer that needed some jazz at a thrift store.
Here’s how I did it:
Materials:
- thrifted blazer
- appliques
- sewing needle
- thread
- straight pins or safety pins
Steps:
- Find a blazer that needs pizazz, your local thrift store will have some.
- Pick out appliques. I had trouble deciding on which ones would work well, so the sales assistant was nice enough to try on the different options for me so I could see how they looked! I paid $12 for both of them.
- Pin them into place and then try on the blazer and adjust as necessary
- Start hand-sewing! I just did a straight stitch all around the edge with black thread. You could also just tack your applique into place but be careful because your purse strap could easily damage all your hard work. You could also try to machine sew your design on but because of the shoulder placement it was easier for me to hand sew.
- Done! Time to show off your diy skills!

This is great Kaitlin! I like your take on the shoulder trend, much more wearable. And I do love my sequins …
what a super DIY idea. so easy with huge results!
This is great! I have two tops that have a great take on the shoulders trend too, I’ll try to explain: they are essentially elbow-length sleeves with a strip of elastic sewn from shoulder to to elbow. It creates a rouched(?) effect that puffs up the sleeve/shoulder. If that makes sense? I feel like it would be a super easy DIY too and is cute.
It’s weird because I have two shirts that have this exact same sleeve, one from Winners the other thrifted originally from Seductions of all places. And I love them.

Thank-you! It was a fun project and I’m glad I achieved a more wearable option.
@Rea, those shirts sound great! I believe rouched is the right word for what you’re describing – I’ll add that to my “diy to-do list”. Thanks for the idea and the compliment!
This is so pretty! I love it!
