I had Chain of Fools by Aretha Franklin stuck in my head as I was making this DIY. It didn’t turn out exactly like the picture last week in the proposal (yes, it’s quite different) so I think grooving to Aretha had an influence on me. Here it is!

Materials

  • Various chains, in different colours, styles and widths (or whatever, you can always use old broken necklaces, or chains you find at Thrift stores) Mine are all from Golden Beads, from $1 – $1.50/metre.
  • Connectors – little silver rings. I used them to connect my chains to the purse. $2 for a pack of 100
  • Pliers $2.50, Golden Beads If you want to disconnect and connect chains you NEED these lest your lovely nails get broken (and they will).
  • A boring purse

Instructions

  1. Plan it out. What I wanted to do was connect the chains in a ‘U” pattern in the front and connect some chains to the back, connecting to the purse handle.
  2. I just went at the purse with the pliers and chains. I propped up my bag to get a sense of how the chains would hang. I did this for the bigger chains.
  3. For the smaller chains, I set everything up on the floor because it was too difficult to attach more to the purse with chains already on.
  4. I measured it out and made the mistake of putting all of my small chains on one ring. This turned out to have bad repercussions as the chains were too heavy for my flimsy connector ring. They broke!
  5. Next I re-added the small chains in two parts.
  6. Voila!

Final Thoughts

I hope you’re not too disappointed with my interpretation. It is really different but I think this suits my purse. Tell me your thoughts! What do you like? What would you have done differently!

  1. I think you did a great job – I really like the small chains you put on the side. Aesthetically, it looks amazing, I’m just trying to picture myself carrying a purse with so many chains on it …does it rattle around a lot?

  2. kaitlin says:

    Hey!

It does rattle around a bit but it’s not as bad as you would think. I know someone who has the chain-shoulder dress from H&M http://bit.ly/9xyNn8 and they get it caught on everything so I’m assuming that might happen with this bag. Yes, not the most practical DIY, I will have to be careful, but I like it so I’m up to the challenge.

    Thanks for your comment!

    Thanks for your comment Justine!

  5. Love it!!! I’m planning on doing something similar but for my ankle boots.

Nice to meet you yesterday in the POD kitchen :)

  6. kaitlin says:

@Justine Thanks! Let me know how your ankle boots go!

It was great to meet you too!!

  7. amber says:

How would you attach chains to ankle boots? I have a pair that has an overlap at the top of them and I found two necklaces that I love (chains) and want to attach them to the boot. Any ideas how I could do that without the chains falling below the boot?

  8. kaitlin says:

Hi Amber! I had the same dilemma when I added chains to my boots. I’m not sure how you want to attach them but check out my other post on how I did it: http://www.myvintagesecret.com/bootstrap-bill-diy/. Hope it helps!
